Talking to my husband about incontinence

I'm not going to lie to you all, just the thought of telling my lovely husband Mark that I had been experiencing incontinence on and off since I gave birth to our girls was mortifying. Crazy really, when we have such a close, loving and supportive relationship. But let's face it: it’s not the sexiest thing in the world, is it?

How to talk about incontinence

Here are my top tips to help you to find the confidence to tell your loved ones what you are experiencing:

  1. Get informed on incontinence. Understanding incontinence and how it can affect so many different people is really important. This will help you to feel secure in your knowledge when explaining what you are experiencing.
  2. Find the right product to give you the confidence you need. I started using Depend Active-Fit ® which allowed me to get back to my beloved running and gave me more confidence to tell Mark what was happening to my body because I was taking control.
  3. Muster the courage to have the conversation. It’s always a good thing to share the issues and problems affecting us with loved ones. Mark was so understanding and supportive, giving me a massive hug. I felt so relieved and was not keeping it a secret anymore.

Supporting a partner with incontinence

When I finally plucked up the courage to tell Mark about my situation, he was horrified to hear I was embarrassed about telling him. We thought it would be helpful to also share Mark’s top tips on how best to approach this conversation with a loved one from the receiving end:

  1. Try not to make light of the subject when your partner tells you. Incontinence is something that can be a little uncomfortable to talk about, but it will be a sensitive moment for your partner. It is important that you take the conversation seriously to reassure them you are supporting them.
  2. Listen with a sensitive and supportive ear. You may not have heard much about incontinence before, or know how many women it affects. Make sure you listen to your partner and be there to help them however they need.
  3. It is great to talk about these subjects so you can help boost your partner’s confidence and ensure they are not alone. The more confident Nadia feels about herself and her body, the more confident and happy I feel too.

Why you should talk to your loved one

Telling my husband Mark felt like such a relief because I was no longer keeping any secrets from him. Now I have regained my confidence and can live life to the full knowing that he is supporting me. Hopefully these tips help and inspire you to open-up to your loved ones as well.
